Silver Needle (Bai Hao Yin Zhen), White Peony (Bai Mai Dan), Jasmine Yin Hao White tea, White Tea Sampler Set, White Dragon Well, Jasmine White Dragon Pearls, Shou Mei White Tea, Jasmine White tea, Chrysanthemum White Tea, Rose White Tea and white peach tea

White tea is the least processed tea of all the types we consume. Unlike some of the more popular teas which usually undergo some level of oxidation, white type is merely steamed and dried. The process of white tea does not involve the heavy use of leaves in black tea, which is the cause of black tea’s dark color, but instead the making of white tea involves a higher amount of buds in the mix. These buds have thin silver hairs on them, which explains the descriptive name of white tea. When white tea is brewed, its color will change to a light yellow and/or red and its flavor will be sweet, without the grass-like flavor related to popular teas like green tea.

There has been a recent push for the distribution of white tea supplements in the health and nutritional industry, with some studies suggesting that white tea may have an anti-cancer benefits, specifically as protection against colon tumors. These studies suggest some alternatives for people who experience side-effects with prescription drugs such as sulindac or even drugs such as aspirin (some side effects for sunlindac include ulcers, bleeding, and even death in some instances). The discussion of white tea as an anti-cancer product includes it being used in the place of these drugs or in combination with them. Some of the potential cancers white tea can protect against are esophageal, gastric, hepatic, lung, skin, small intestine, pancreatic, bladder, mammary and colon cancers.

White tea has the most subtle flavor of all the teas, it is milder, contains less caffeine and thought to have the most antioxidant out of all the teas. It’s refreshing and does not have an overwhelming taste or scent compared to other teas. Only the youngest buds are selected for production of white tea, giving the tea the white-silvery hair on its buds. The difference between green and white tea is the production process where white tea does not go thru pan-frying, but instead allowed to wither.

Try It: Green tea Polyphenols, potent plant antioxidants, are what’s believed to give green tea its immune-boosting effects. One laboratory study suggested that a particular type of polyphenols called catechins may kill influenza viruses. To maximize benefits and minimize bitterness, use just-below-boiling water and steep green tea no more than a minute or two. A little lemon and honey can also help blunt the bitterness. But don’t add milk, because the proteins will bind to the polyphenols, making them ineffective.
