Teas retain a higher concentration of certain nutrients depending upon the amount of fermentation they undergo. Green tea which is unfermented contains a high amount of catechins and EGCG, and black tea contains the highest amount of theaflavin with its full fermentation. Oolong tea, with its semi-fermentation process yields the highest amount of polyphenol, which is the reason for its favored flavor. And though green tea may be the most highly touted tea out there as far as health benefits, the health and beauty benefits that oolong tea produces with its polyphenols may soon bring oolong tea the same fame that green tea has enjoyed.

The polyphenols in oolong tea and other teas, also known as tannin, battles free radicals as it does in green tea. A free radical is an unpaired electron that has no purpose concerning our bodies’ growth but rather act on its own often different types of damage on the cellular level. Free radicals can damage our DNA, mitochondria, cell membrane among other parts of the cell, and contribute to aging, cancer, heart and various other diseases. Our bodies’ natural way of combating these free radicals is through its use of antioxidants such as the polyphenols found in oolong tea. In battling free radicals, the polyphenols in oolong tea work to strengthen an enzyme in our body called superoxide dismutase or SOD. SOD cannot be supplemented like vitamins and minerals but can only be enhanced with antioxidants such as polyphenols.

Additionally, by boosting the SOD within our bodies, oolong tea can do wonders with combating the aging of skin, especially with dark spots and wrinkles. Historically, Oolong tea has been used in China as an herb for certain energy purposes as well as to combat obesity. The scientific explanation for this is that triglycerides are the type of fat stored as body fat more than any other when an excess exists, and studies have shown oolong’s polyphenols to be effective in increasing the metabolism of triglycerides. Furthermore, Oolong tea has been found to decrease tooth decay and to improve dermatitis conditions.

Oolong tea is processed by using a tray and sun dried for a few hours before the rolling process. It is allowed to be oxidized for a short period of time thus creating this semi-fermented tea. There are many factors that contribute to the quality of the Oolong tea, such as the region the plants are grown in and tea plants can only be produced into Oolong tea in a few areas in China and Taiwan. Oolong tea is favored by many tea drinkers because of its digestive functions, and it is the only type of tea that is thought to be good for your stomach. Besides being good for your stomach, Oolong tea possesses all the antioxidants and health benefits as other teas.
