Loose White Tea

Silver Needle is the highest-possible grade of white tea in China. This blend is made from young buds that feature a thin layer of metallic-gray hairs. The leaves are known for their high-antioxidant content that is partially due to the minimal steps taken to process them. Silver Needle blends are low in caffeine; you'll get just under 20 milligrams of caffeine per cup compared to the 200 milligrams of caffeine you get from a strong cup of coffee.

Recent studies have shown several key benefits of including Silver Needle in your diet. This blend is known for fighting tooth decay, and it contains less fluoride than black or green varieties. White brews also contain higher levels of potent antioxidants, which help to fend off infection, bacteria and the formation of free radicals. As an added benefit, studies have linked regular consumption to a reduction in certain types of cancer as well as to the prevention of strokes.

In Defense of Loose Leaf Blends Like Silver Needle

Loose leaf blends can be steeped several times to produce a different tasting brew. The longer you steep the leaves, the denser the flavor. When you use a bag, you can't control the intensity of your brew. Flavor is extracted from the surface of the leaves during the brewing process. When you use bags, the water can only extract a limited amount of flavor and nutrients from the leaves.

The Tea Farm is an online service that provides loose leaf teas from China, Sri Lanka and India. Pristine Silver Needle buds are picked just once a year, making the loose blends slightly more expensive than other white teas, such as Bai Mai Dan, White Dragon Well or Shou Mei.
