Chinese White Tea

Chinese white tea is a specialty of the Fujian and Yunnan Provinces. These regional varieties undergo less processing than green and black brews, which gives them a higher concentration of potent antioxidants and less caffeine. These Chinese brews have up to 20 milligrams of caffeine while black varieties have as much as 120 milligrams of caffeine per cup. The leaves are picked at the first sign of ripeness, and the delicate buds are used to create the finest-grade loose leaf blends.

Exploring the Different Grades of Chinese White Tea

There are several different grades of Chinese white brews. The highest grade is called Bai Hao Yin or Silver Needle. This pure variety cannot feature any damaged buds. The second-highest grade is called Bai Mai Dan or White Peony. This blend offers a more fragrant brew and includes subtle hints of vanilla and honey. The third-highest grade is called Tribute Eyebrow, and it's picked between April and June. Only the bud and two different types of leaves are used to make this blend. Long Life Eyebrow is the fourth-highest grade, and it features only leaves and no buds. The leaves are picked later, producing a darker liquid and more intense flavor.
